When it comes to official stats, Mexico is far better off than the US
The Mexican national statistics institute is the messenger that can’t be shot.
Worry rippled across the global statistics community when Donald Trump fired the head of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics after negative job numbers came out this month. Graciela Márquez Colín wasn’t all that surprised.
It’s common across the world for statistics bosses to get fired when the numbers aren’t to the government’s liking, she told The Mexico Political Economist. But Márquez Colín isn’t worried for herself. As the president of Mexico’s National Information and Statistics Institute (INEGI), she is able to get on with her job with hard-nosed honesty because of the guardrails protecting her and her agency.
