Former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador said it himself: “Too much power turns the clever stupid and it makes the stupid go mad.”

Mexico got a good glimpse of both stupidity and madness last week after the US Department of Homeland Security broadcast a primetime ad on Mexican television threatening any undocumented migrants who might be thinking of heading to the US. Outrage followed across all political parties and sectors of Mexican society. The government saw its chance.
