MXPE Weekly Essentials. Only the most important news in Mexican politics, policy, and markets from the past week.

Last week’s highlights:

  • Regional sovereignty—Mexico will be buying military unmanned aircraft and anti-drone technology from the US. It will be used to deal with the common bilateral of organised crime—especially its increased drone use. There is a longer term aim for Mexico: The US has applied up to 100% tariffs on foreign drones (the heavier, the bigger the tariff) in order to separate its own industry from the Chinese and European-dominated drone supply chains.
    Economy secretary Marcelo Ebrard
previously told The Mexico Political Economist that he aspires to get the US to recognise that this strategic sovereignty is best achieved alongside Mexico as a supplier of industrial capacity and expertise.
