Mexico’s tax authority is the government’s secret weapon
A historic tax haul is covered in the fingerprints of the government's most quietly powerful man.
It was all the more shocking for the contrast. First president Claudia Sheinbaum touted “historic” employment figures as the graph behind her showed a distinct petering off in growth, dangerously teetering on a fall in formal jobs. So, when she then showed a whopping 19.7% real increase in tax collection, the surprise was all the greater.
This wasn’t meant to happen. Even by the government’s own reckoning tax income should have been lower. “It’s the result of a moral economy and Mexican Humanism,” said the president.
