Mexico has a time honoured tradition of manipulating its US counterparts. From president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (1964-1970) flipping through a catalogue of military ordinance while casually bemoaning the issues he was having with Communists to the US Ambassador, to the recent media appearances of opposition Mexican senator Lilly Téllez.

It is a lopsided relationship, but not in the way one might expect. While the US is often unaware of what on Earth is going south of the border, Mexicans are keenly in the know about what makes its northern neighbour’s elected politicians, business people, and media tick and how to push their buttons.
